Engaging, empowering, energising culture in Exeter

In case you missed it...

Exeter Community Radio, which broadcasts as Phonic FM, is seeking a new director to join its board.

Phonic FM is Exeter’s ‘sound alternative’ – a community radio station for the city and beyond, broadcasting on 106.8FM in Exeter and online at phonic.fm. It is a largely self-funded membership organisation with around 80 people actively involved in any given month. In 2017, Phonic FM enters its tenth year of broadcasting.

Phonic FM provides its members, and by extension its audience, creative freedom to express their passions for music and the arts through their broadcasts. Music is the greater part of what we do, with programmes featuring pop, rock, indie, folk, jazz, funk, reggae, world, hip-hop, dance, electronica, classical, experimental and beyond. Music programmes are accompanied by a range of speech programmes covering local affairs, the arts, technology and more.

The board is looking to strengthen its expertise in the following key areas. The successful candidate should bring experience in at least one of these:

  • Volunteer/membership management
  • Business development (particularly in a social enterprise environment)
  • Fundraising and sponsorship

Broadcasting experience is not a pre-requisite, but candidates should have an interest in the cultural life of the city.

This is an unpaid position. Directors are expected to take an active role in the management and development of the station: attending board meetings every six weeks, with additional work to be completed as and when necessary between meetings. The average time commitment of each of the six existing directors is around ten to fifteen hours per month.

Please send expressions of interest, with a summary of your background and relevant skills, to Dr David Treharne, Exeter Community Radio’s chair, at drdavidtreharne@btconnect.com, by 21 May 2017.
