Engaging, empowering, energising culture in Exeter

The White Moose Summer Exhibition

22nd June - 29th August

Pairadaeza, the old Persian word for an enclosed space also lends its name to the notion of the Persian, Garden of Paradise.

The Persian palaces and temples were surrounded by gardens, and every city had private, and sometimes public, gardens; opened to all during Persian New Year celebrations. These gardens, where shade and cool water could be enjoyed, were used as places of spiritual solace and a rendez-vous for friends.

For more than 3,000 years, the Persian garden has been the focus of Iranian imagination, influencing the country's art as well as literature. Lavish beds of flowers, used profusely in such gardens, inspired the weaving of floral designs, known as ‘garden’ carpets.

The aim of the White Moose, Pairadaeza summer exhibition is to bring together four local artists whose very differing works reflect this notion of the garden as a place of solace and physical, psychological and spiritual healing. It will be featuring amazing artworks from John Hurford, Ros Cockram, Mary Chugg and Francesca Owen, all producing wonderful and inspired work, but from very different perspectives.

Francesca, the youngest artist of the four artists, only works with natural pigments and plant dyes, and has created an installation, ‘The Dyers Kitchen’ especially for this White Moose show. Throughout the summer, Francesca will also be creating a garden within the wildflower meadow at Broomhill Sculpture Gardens, growing flowers and edible plants to use as natural pigments and for sustenance.

To compliment the Pairadaeza exhibition, White Moose will be organising a visit to the amazing, private garden of Plaz Metaxu, Witheridge, where many of the themes explored in the exhibition are given resonance; a place where nature, art and spirituality are fused.

There will be further information, dates and prices about associated the workshops, talks and the garden visit, on the White Moose website; www.whitemoose.co.uk or please email; info@whitemoose.co.uk or call; 01271 379872.
