Engaging, empowering, energising culture in Exeter

Hey all,
so many of you will be aware that I'm looking at the potential for a city-wide arts event. In fact, I've already gone some way in putting it together. Here is what it's looking like at the moment (tentatively) based on conversations and plans, both sketchy and more concrete.

I'm sharing it on here, as this is a 'backstage' forum, for people engaged in the arts & culture in the city and communication between ourselves is important. I'm looking for engagement - if you're a part of an organisation that would like to take part or a practitioner who would like to exhibit - there's plenty of time...and space.

The event is intended to frame activity that is already happening and bring it together to form an 'offer' from the city for that period. Essentially, if we say it's in, then it's in...There is also room for people to instigate new work for it too. This isn't a commissioning activity, but an umbrella/framing action.

As a part of it, EOS are inviting artists, at a new reduced participation rate, from performance, moving image and other art forms too. There are venues available to exhibit in if you don't have a 'studio' to 'open'.
NOSE will also be seeking submissions for its event (more info to follow).

Art Week Exeter will be the first umbrella arts event in the city and sees collaboration between arts organisations and practitioners reach a new level. The cultural ecology of the city is being played out across a large-scale event, while retaining all of the character and attention that we’ve come to expect from its individual players. From the landscape watercolour painter in her studio to the international digital hacker embedded in the heart of a city institution, we’ll be showing the wide range of creative activity that makes up our cultural landscape. Expect to be drawn into the cultural buzz, shocked and awed by the displays of talent, and transported by journeys of inner and displayed beauty.

This event will include work at the RAMM, Phoenix Arts Centre and Brook Gallery alongside pop-up exhibitions, street interventions and workshops in community spaces. More than 60 artists will be directly participating, many opening their own studios or showing in galleries, social and cultural establishments in the city.

The week of activity will be illustrated with films, talks and discussions on Trade/ Exchange and contemporary arts practice, and will round off with an Art Car Boot – something for everyone!

The event will include: Sean Lynch at the Phoenix and RAMM, Museum of Contemporary Commodities, NOSE2016, Local Art Show at RAMM, Exeter Open Studios, Community Carvers, SoundCamp, Art Car Boot, Norman Ackroyd at Brook Gallery, Exeter Art Radio on Phonic FM, plus films, talks and exhibitions at the Phoenix Arts Centre, Barnfield Theatre, Exeter Community Centre, The Unit, TOPOS, The Yard gallery at Exeter School of Art, Bike Shed Theatre and more.

The date we're currently aiming for is the week beginning 9th May - [that's week 19]
